Description:

ImageScaler - free image scale, resize and crop program for windows

I wrote this program because I've got tired of the poor quality image scaling(i.e. resizing) in image manipulation programs like: PhotoShop, PaintShopPro, Picture Publisher, ACDSee etc. which only offer the crappy bicubic algorithm.
The program is simple with some usefull functions.
If you need to resize a few photos this program may be a good choice.

+ Opens multiple image formats
+ Good quality image scaling (Lanczos3,Mitchell,Spline,Bell,Hermlite,Triangle algorithms)
+ Image Flip,Flop and Rotation(+/-90 degrees)
+ Mix with color, Lightness, Darkness
+ Gamma correction
+ Crop region
+ Undo function :)

Hi, thanks for this great program.

I need to resize (to 50%) some digital pictures I have taken to obtain the best possible quality. I have searched the net to see which is the best recommended algorithm and I haven't found much. Lanczos3 seems to be a good method, but I read something about it beeing recommended for big resizes (>400%) and for smaller ones like I want to do, they said it wasn't so advisable.

I have tried the methods and the differences are subtle. I believe with Lanczos3 I geat image a little more crispier if compared to other methods and also to GIMP bicubic resizes.

What would be your advise? or where should I search/read info about this to be more clear about advantages/disadvantages of each method?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

My recommendation is the following.

Use:

Lanczos3 to decrease image dimensions(<100%) it provides better sharpness

Spline to increase image dimensions(>100%) it provides less noise
(it is generally not a good practice to increase image size)

Hello, Image Scaler is a great program but in my PC - with Diamond Viper 330 AGP at 800x600x32bit - the toolbar appears with corrupted pixels and colors. I viewed this bug in CDBurnerXP Pro 2.2.2 also, now resolved in the most recent version. Read history of CDBurnerXP Pro versions for more details...

Regards, GiGiO from Italy (excuse me for my bad english)

What a fantastic program, and so small. Does a better job than Photoshop. Scales without pixelating. Thanks,

You don't have to use WinRAR. IZArc has nearly all the same functionality (most importantly to this discussion: supports the RAR format) and is completely free. Google it.

lovely program.
There's just a couple of things which bother me...
1. When you hover your cursor over the selection box and zoom icons, the floating textbox says "Save Image" instead of "Selection box" and "Zoom" or whatever they are supposed to say. Think that needs to be changed. Same goes for the special effects drop down icon-menu (i.e. 3rd from right). Hovering with the mouse says "Paste from Clipboard".
2. I've tried opening a number of images but I'm unable to find one which allows me to use the color picker (eye dropper) as the icon is always greyed out? When exactly can this be used?
3. When zooming, I can't really tell whether I'm zooming in or out until my screen finishes redrawing the image. I know the left and right mouse buttons are used for zooming in and out respectively, but would it possible to use the shift button to toggel between zooming in and out when clicking on the image? Getting the zoom to work with the mouse scroll function would also be really useful. Also when using the shift button as a zoom toggle, have the magnifying glass cursor change between + and - to let the user know whether it is a zoom in or out.
4. When you use the selection box to copy a certain segment of a picture, and paste it into another application (i.e. simplest being Paint), the copied segment appears on a white background the size of the original picture but with the required region at the top left hand corner. The required region doesn't appear without the white background.
5. Moreover, after copying the said region over, the selection box still remains on the picture in ImageScaler and doesn't go away until I perform one of the actions (rotating, flip/flop special effects). Even selecting another area with a selection rectangle doesn't make the pervious one disappear.
6. Would it be possible to have a grab hand like in Adobe Reader? So that after we enlarge a picture to beyond screen dimensions, we can use the grab hand to "drag" the picture to whichever corner we want it without having to maximize the screen, find the scroll bars, scroll, wait till the screen finishes redrawing the picture, scrolling again, wait for redraw, etc.

This program has really got potential and in my opinion, a god send for people who work a lot with images. If you want screenshots for any of the problems I've mentioned, let me know. I'll post them here.

cheers!

I especially like Spline and Triangle for upsizing an image.

Oh yeah, I can't believe that "rar is bad" guy wants to make computer programs his friend. rotfl

This comments are for the people downloading the software they are not forwarded in any way to the author or site administrator.

If you need to post a comment to the author use the forum on this site or send an email to the address in program's about box.

The program is distributed as RAR for several reasons which include:
- RAR is popular enought (7z is not)
- RAR has better compression ratio compared to ZIP
- RAR has better recovery than ZIP
- there are quite alot freeware utilities supporting RAR (TugZIP/IZArch/Filzip ...)

It's the best tool I've ever seen to resize and crop images. It's small and handy. I'm using this tool when I'm on travel and want to put my digital images on my web site. Not every computer has Photoshop etc. but only paint and it messes up the quality of the images when you save as jpeg.

It'll be great if it could support shortcuts like Ctrl-Z etc. Great job! Thanks so much for the time you've spent on this program but I guess it was worth it.

[quote:7a90963d44]wow, better than Photoshop huh? I guess thousands upon thousands of professional artists should really get their hands on your program instead.....btw, Photoshop has 3 sampling methods, not just one. Unless you work at Nasa, the quality is negligable.[/quote:7a90963d44]

False. I use Photoshop everyday in my work. For many things, bicubic is fine, but it is not the best, and bilinear and "nearest neighbor" leave a lot to be desired (bicubic is the best of the three for increasing dimensions, but is not very good at it and is best used only for decreasing dimensions, the other two are only good for decreasing dimensions). The various Spline filters (especially B-Spline, available in IrfanView) and Lanzcos3 produce much better results in most circumstances. I'm guessing from your comment that you actually have never used anything other than what's built into P-shop.

Wow... the closest match to Photoshop bicubic sharper. Sharper and a bit more contrast.
